About half of adults and one-third of juveniles in correctional and detention facilities report having a history of traumatic brain injury. A history of TBI is linked to disciplinary problems and higher recidivism rates, as well as mental health problems and substance use disorders. Treatments and accommodations can help, but many people with a history of TBI in correctional and detention facilities are going unidentified and untreated.
