Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence: The CCHP-A Certification Marks Three Decades of Leadership in Correctional Health Care

Thirty years ago, the Certified Correctional Health Professional-Advanced (CCHP-A) certification was introduced, establishing a new standard for excellence in correctional health care. Since then, it has come to symbolize the highest level of professional achievement, recognizing those who have excelled in advancing health care within the correctional system.

A Milestone in Correctional Health Care

Launched in 1994 by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), the CCHP-A program was created to recognize experienced correctional health professionals with advanced expertise. The CCHP-A certification signifies not only deep knowledge but also leadership and a commitment to improving patient care.

Susan Laffan, RN, CCHP-RN, CCHP-A, a retired director of nursing/HSA, reflects, “I was determined to become the first person to earn CCHP-A certification in New Jersey to prove my extensive knowledge in correctional health care. After passing the exam, I felt privileged to join such an elite group of professionals.”

Achieving CCHP-A status requires demonstrating mastery of complex challenges, submitting a portfolio of achievements, and passing an advanced-level exam. This credential represents continuous improvement, leadership, and ethical decision-making.

The Impact of CCHP-A Professionals

CCHP-A professionals have left a lasting mark on the correctional health care field. They raise standards, foster innovation, and inspire future generations. Their efforts have led to improved care quality, patient outcomes, and overall safety in correctional facilities. Their expertise assures stakeholders that patient care is managed by professionals committed to the highest standards.

Leading by Example

CCHP-A professionals often mentor and guide others, sharing best practices and fostering professional growth. Todd Kramer, CCHP-A, director of policy and standards compliance at Delaware Department of Corrections, shares, “The CCHP-A certification has elevated my expertise and allowed me to make informed decisions that translate into better quality of care. It has driven me to set a higher standard of care while fostering a culture of continuous learning, leadership, and excellence.”

Looking Forward: The Next 30 Years

As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the CCHP-A certification, we also look ahead to the future. Correctional health care is evolving, and the CCHP-A credential remains crucial in ensuring professionals are prepared to meet emerging challenges and lead the way in innovative, patient-centered solutions.

The CCHP-A is more than a credential, it’s a symbol of dedication, expertise, and leadership. As Michael McMunn, CCHP-A, an expert witness and consultant, notes, “It is critical that those with the best education, experience, and certifications lead in our health care specialty.”

Here’s to the next 30 years of excellence in correctional health care.
