In correctional settings, staff frequently encounter individuals with challenging personality traits that can complicate care and interactions. This webinar will introduce the alternative DSM-5 model for personality disorders, focusing on personality functioning and the key elements of identity, self-direction, empathy, and intimacy. Participants will explore how these elements exist along a continuum, from little to severe impairment, and how they shape behavior and interpersonal dynamics.

The session will provide strategies for tailoring interactions with individuals who have more serious impairments, helping professionals break out of unproductive patterns and reduce frustration. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of personality functioning and leave with practical tools to foster more effective, collaborative relationships with patients who often present the greatest challenges—while also gaining insights that may enhance their own professional growth.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the four basic elements of personality functioning as presented in the DSM-5
  • Describe personality as falling along a continuum of pathology
  • Discuss practical skills for working effectively with individuals who exhibit challenging personality functioning
