Pharmacy Association Releases White Paper on Challenges and Opportunities in Corrections

ASCP has released a white paper and recording of its recent program, “Sentenced to LTC: Aging, Pharmacists, and Prison Care,” held live at the location where the movie, “The Shawshank Redemption,” was filmed. NCCHC volunteers Todd Kramer, MCJ, CCHP-A, Director of Policy and Standards Compliance, Delaware Department of Corrections; and Tracey Titus, RN, CCHP-RN, CCHP-A, Senior Director of Policy and Accreditation, Centurion Health, participated on the panel.

The panel identified key roles and opportunities for pharmacists in corrections, including:

  • Pharmacists can help provide education, oversight, and guidance for other staff and help identify opportunities for cost savings and changes that reduce administrative burden.
  • Pharmacists can expand quality and establish connections with area hospitals and public health officials.
  • Pharmacists can help incarcerated patients manage chronic conditions and provide guidance on medication adherence and compliance.
  • Pharmacists can leverage technology, AI, and other innovations to provide meaningful clinical medication profiles and reduce staff burden.

The webinar and white paper are posted on the ASCP website.
