Correctional Mental Health Care Conference Focuses on Critical Issues For Incarcerated and Staff

As the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health concerns have risen to the forefront. Overdose deaths and suicides are up throughout the country, with similar increases in corrections. Staffing shortages and staff burnout add to the difficulties correctional leaders face in bringing mental health treatment to incarcerated people.

To bring correctional health care professionals together to discuss best practices and how their facilities are facing mental health challenges, NCCHC will hold the 2022 Correctional Mental Health Care Conference in Denver on August 1-2. A virtual conference will follow on August 17-18.

The conference will focus new research, pragmatic solutions, and answers to persistent challenges such as suicide prevention, using technology to keep up with clinical needs, compassion fatigue and burnout, trauma, brain injuries, serious mental illness, and more.

The conference features 28 sessions, up to 17 hours of continuing education, and the opportunity for mental health professionals in correctional settings to network with others facing similar challenges.

Sessions of special interest include the following:

  • Bias in Clinical Decision-Making
  • I Refuse to Take My Meds! Psychotropic Medication Treatment Over Objection
  • Managing the Complexities of Mental Health Treatment Units
  • Moral Injury Among Mental Health Staff: Definitions, Considerations, and Recommendations
  • Prediction of Violence: Safer Management Using a Team Approach
  • Taking a Collaborative Approach to Severe and Persistent Mental Illness
  • Time to Think Differently: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Suicide Prevention
  • Understanding PTSD and Variances in Response to Trauma

Attendees can also get a refresher on NCCHC Mental Health Standards and take the CCHP exam on-site.

The conference will take place at the Hyatt Regency Denver. Attendees who register by July 1 save up to $50. For more information, visit ncchc.org/mental-health-conference.
