New Video Highlights Careers in Correctional Mental Health

“When you think about the future of your career, where do you see yourself? Have you ever considered working in corrections?”

Those questions introduce the latest in the NCCHC Foundation’s video series exploring correctional health care careers, this one focused on careers in correctional mental health. The video features psychologists, therapists, counselors, social workers, and other mental-health professionals who have chosen to work in jails, prisons, and detention facilities, discussing the rewards of their jobs.

“If you want to be where the need is greatest, this is where it is,” says Walter Campbell, PhD, CCHP-MH, chief psychologist, Idaho Department of Correction. “I think a lot of us find that the overall experience of working with people who are in the greatest need and have the fewest resources to be very rewarding.”

The video series is part of the NCCHC Foundation’s commitment to fostering workforce development and attracting new entrants to the field. The video is available below and posted on NCCHC’s YouTube page and on the new Careers in Correctional Health Care page. Please share the videos on personal and corporate social media, forward to universities and alumni networks, and share anywhere you have an audience of students or health care professionals who might be interested in this highly satisfying field.

The NCCHC Foundation is seeking additional firsthand video or written accounts on the benefits of careers in correctional health care and assistance in promoting our video series. Contact [email protected] to participate.
