NCCHC Foundation Seeks Volunteers to Move Forward

The NCCHC Foundation is tackling critical initiatives in 2025 — and we’d love for you to join us! We’re seeking passionate individuals to help make a difference on committees, reviewing scholarship applications, and serving as conference mentors. If you wish to apply, please read the descriptions and complete our short survey. Your responses will help us match your skills and interests with the right role.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Submit your interest via the survey
  2. Submission review: Committee chairs will carefully review all submissions.
  3. Follow-up: I will personally reach out to every applicant in December or January.

Your time, talent, and dedication can help the NCCHC Foundation continue making a lasting impact. Together, we can create meaningful change, and we can’t do it without you!

1. Board of Trustees
Chair: Sharen Barboza, PhD, CCHP-MH

Our Board of Trustees guides the Foundation’s vision, supporting strategic growth and plays a vital role in ensuring financial health. We welcome leaders who can provide expertise, governance, and advocacy to support our mission. We’re looking for volunteers with strong professional networks, particularly in correctional health care or related sectors, a passion for service, and the ability to advocate for our mission and foster partnerships.

2.a. Workforce Development Committee
Chair: Brandon De Julius, MBA, CCHP-A
Vice Chair: Pauline Marcussen, DHA, RHIA, CCHP

Help shape the future of correctional health care by joining our Workforce Development Committee, focused on advancing educational opportunities and career resources. If you are connected with educators, mentors, or industry professionals, your influence can drive our workforce initiatives forward.

2.b. Mentorship Subcommittee
The Mentorship Subcommittee needs dedicated volunteers who will play a critical role in developing a structured Mentor Program. The program will provide guidance for mentors, helping them support professional growth and career advancement for newcomers in correctional health care. Members of the Mentorship Subcommittee will:

  • Develop a comprehensive, structured Mentor Program to define the mentor role and outline mentorship objectives.
  • Establish resources and best practices to ensure mentors are equipped to guide mentees effectively.
  • Foster career growth and a supportive network for early-career correctional health care professionals.

3. Reentry Initiative Committee
Chair: Augie Ghilarducci
Vice Chair: Brenda Fields, RN, RHIA, CCHP

We’re developing a comprehensive Reentry Toolkit to support justice-involved individuals’ transition back into society and to reduce recidivism. Volunteers with expertise in reentry services, social work, corrections, or community programs are encouraged to join. Your role will involve helping compile best practices from across the country, making this an invaluable resource for facilities and communities nationwide. This project is a significant undertaking and will require monthly meetings at a minimum. We’re seeking passionate individuals willing to dedicate their time and expertise to making a lasting impact.

4. Fundraising Committee
Chair: Sharen Barboza, PhD, CCHP-MH
Vice Chair: Robert Morgan, PhD

We are looking for individuals who have a strong professional network, experience in nonprofit fundraising or development, and are passionate about correctional health care. As a member of the Fundraising Committee, you will:

  • Engage Donors: Build relationships with individuals and organizations.
  • Build Partnerships: Leverage your network to connect with potential funders and collaborators.
  • Enhance Stewardship: Play a key role in fostering relationships with existing donors and ensuring they feel valued and appreciated for their contributions.

This role requires regular participation in committee meetings and active involvement in fundraising activities and initiatives.

5. Mentor a Conference Scholarship Winner
Managed by Julie Haugland

By sharing your experience and guidance, you can directly impact the next generation of correctional health care professionals. Mentors should:

  • Plan on attending whatever conference they are going to be a mentor at (unfortunately, we are not able to offer support to attend). Being present to introduce a scholarship winner to your network and helping them feel comfortable at the conference is vital.
  • Be a current CCHP
  • Bring 5+ years of correctional health care experience
  • Have great interpersonal communication skills and be excited about supporting the next generation of Correctional Health Care providers!

This opportunity is ideal for professionals with a strong desire to give back by providing support, knowledge, and insights to those early in their careers.

6.  Scholarship Application Reviewer
Managed by Julie Haugland

Scholarship applications are reviewed three times per year, approximately two months before each conference. As a reviewer, you will be assigned between 20 and 40 applications to read, score, and return by the deadline, typically within a three-week window. Each application includes three mandatory essay questions (maximum 700 words each) for you to evaluate and score. We provide a scoring rubric.

We often receive 300+ complete applications per cycle, which are divided by professional interest. Whenever possible, you will be assigned applications within your area of expertise. The more reviewers we have, the lighter the workload for everyone, so we truly value and need as many volunteers as we can get!  Your contribution as a reviewer helps us identify and support deserving candidates, and we greatly appreciate your time and effort in this vital role.
