SUMMARY:Webinar: Menopause Care Behind Bars: Turning Evidence into Action
DESCRIPTION:Menopause Care Behind Bars: Turning Evidence into Action \nWomen are one of the fastest-growing populations in U.S. correctional settings\, and many experience perimenopause and menopause during incarceration. Yet menopause-related symptoms and health care needs often go unrecognized and untreated. \nEmerging research highlights significant gaps in care\, including limited screening for menopause symptoms and low use of evidence-based treatments. At the same time\, reporting and advocacy efforts have brought greater attention to the experiences of individuals navigating menopause in correctional environments\, where conditions can exacerbate symptoms and create additional barriers to care. \nThis webinar will bring together research and practice-based perspectives to examine the scope of the issue and identify key gaps in menopause care. Presenters will share emerging research as well as Impact Justice’s work in California to improve awareness\, education\, and system-level responses. Participants will explore practical strategies for improving menopause care\, with an emphasis on education\, implementation\, and opportunities for meaningful change. They will also learn how to connect with Impact Justice and explore similar efforts in their own settings. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDescribe current research on perimenopause and menopause among incarcerated individuals\nApply evidence-based approaches to assess and manage menopause symptoms and implement strategies to improve care and education within correctional settings\nEvaluate strategies\, including the Impact Justice initiative\, to improve provider training\, patient education and awareness of menopausePresenters\n\nPresenters \nKelly Stewart Danner has built and led innovative projects for Impact Justice\, a national innovation and research center\, since 2022. In addition to building Impact Justice’s vertical farming job training and placement program (“Growing Justice”)\, Ms. Danner developed a pilot program to expand menopause awareness and care to women in California’s prisons (“Menopause Project”)\, which is currently expanding to several other states. \nAndrea Knittel\, MD\, PhD\, CCHP\, is a clinician and researcher focused on illuminating and mitigating the reproductive health disparities facing people who experience incarceration. In her clinical work\, she provides full spectrum OB/GYN care to women\, trans men\, and gender expansive people\, including office gynecology\, gynecologic surgery\, prenatal care\, and labor and delivery. Her current research work addresses the obstetric and gynecologic impact of incarceration. She is a member of the NCCHC Board of Representatives and liaison to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. \nWebinar Fee: \n$69 ($59 for CCHPs)\, includes access to the power point presentation\, the webinar recording and CE credit – 1.25 hours for ACCME\, ANCC\, APA\, and General (CCHP and others). \nContinuing education credit (1.25 hours) available for: \nNurses: The National Commission on Correctional Health Care designates this learning experience as Outcome Level 1 & 2.
